The Gatha Cognition reference style

Our books follow the same author–year reference style as our journals, so every title under our imprint is cited the same way. You don’t have to master it: send your references in any one consistent style and our Reference styling service converts and checks them for you.

1. Citations in the text

Cite the author’s surname and the year of publication.

2. The reference list

  • Headed References, at the end of the book or of each chapter.
  • Every work cited in the text appears in the list, and every work in the list is cited in the text.
  • In alphabetical order of the first author’s surname; works by the same author in order of year.
  • All authors are listed — et al. is used only in the text, never in the list.
  • Authors as Surname, Initials., separated by commas, with “and” before the last author.
  • Titles of articles and chapters in sentence case; titles of journals and books in italics.

4. Small details that matter

  • DOIs written as full links: https://doi.org/10.xxxx/… — add the DOI whenever a work has one.
  • Page and year ranges with an en dash (41–48, 2019–2021), not a hyphen.
  • Volume and issue as 9(7); page range after a comma.
  • Curly quotation marks (‘ ’ “ ”) and the serial comma in lists of three or more.
Using a different style?

That’s fine — just use one style consistently. Our Reference styling service (₹2,000, included in eBook Scholar, Scholar and Signature) converts your references to the house style and checks every citation against the list. If your book must follow APA, Chicago or Harvard instead, tell us and we’ll apply that style.
