Review a manuscript on the Manuscript Portal
Thank you for reviewing for us. Peer reviewers are the heart of our books: this guide explains how to accept an invitation, what to look for, how to write and submit your report, and the rules on confidentiality and AI.

Sign in to the Manuscript Portal®
- Open the Manuscript Portal and sign in with your User ID or email and your password. Your sign-in details come by email with your first invitation.
- Forgot your password? Click Forgot Password; a reset link comes to your email.
- Already registered as an author or editor? One account works for all your roles: choose Register As Reviewer or Login As reviewer from the menu under your name.
- Would you like to review for us? Send the editorial office your CV and areas of expertise; reviewers are invited by field.
Accept or decline the invitation
- The editor invites you by email, with the title and abstract of the manuscript. Click Accept or Decline in the email, or sign in and open Call for Reviewers.
- Accept only manuscripts in your field of expertise. Decline, or tell the editor, if you have a conflict of interest (for example, you know or work with the authors, or compete with the work) or cannot finish in time.
- The report is due 30 days from the invitation. Accepted manuscripts move to Active Manuscript(s), with the due date.
- View PDF opens the manuscript without the authors’ names. You can also open the similarity (Turnitin) report and, for a revised manuscript, Compare versions.
What to assess
Read the manuscript against the scope of the book and the Author Guide. Please assess:
- Innovation
- Scope
- Methods, techniques & data
- Explanations & justification
- Contribution
- Applicability
- Flow of writing
- Language
- Is the work original, and has something very similar been published elsewhere?
- Are the data, figures and tables complete and clear, and do the conclusions follow from the results?
- Are the references adequate and relevant? Is anything important missing?
- Be constructive and specific: the aim is to help the authors improve the work. Number your points so they can answer each one.
Similarity report (Turnitin)
Every manuscript is checked with Turnitin iThenticate, which compares it with published articles, books and web pages. The editorial office runs the check; the report can then be opened only by the people working on that manuscript.
| Who | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Editorial office | Runs the check on submitted manuscripts, and again if a check fails. Only the editorial office can start a check. |
| The manuscript’s authors | Open the report from their author account — a view-only copy. |
| Its reviewers | Reviewers assigned to the manuscript open it from Active Manuscript(s) or the report form. |
| Its editors | The editor handling the manuscript and the journal’s editorial board editors open it from the manuscript’s editorial page. |
| Anyone else | Cannot open it: the button shows “no access”. Reports are never public. |
How to open it — sign in to the Manuscript Portal.
- The similarity button is on the manuscript’s row in Active Manuscript(s), and at the top of the report form, next to View Manuscript.
- When the check is done, the button shows the score, for example Similarity Report (12%). Click it: the full report opens in a new browser tab in Turnitin’s viewer. If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for gathacognition.com and click again.
- The report highlights each matching passage and lists the source it matches.
| The button shows | What it means |
|---|---|
| Similarity: not yet checked | The editorial office has not run the check yet. Please look again later. |
| Checking Similarity… / still running — reload later | Turnitin is comparing the manuscript. Reload the page after a few minutes. |
| Similarity Report (12%) | The check is done; the percentage is the overall similarity score. Click to open the full report. |
| Similarity Check Failed / report unavailable | Something went wrong at Turnitin. The editorial office runs the check again; write to us if it stays like this. |
| Similarity report: no access | You are not one of the people on this manuscript, so the report cannot be shown. |
Use the report to support your assessment of originality: look at what matches, not only the percentage. Mention any concern in your confidential report to the editor.
Write the report
In Active Manuscript(s), click Submit Report. The form has:
| Part | What to give |
|---|---|
| Recommendation | Accept, Submit With Minor Revision, Submit With Major Revision, or Reject. Required. |
| Five questions | Yes or no: within the scope; similar publication elsewhere; clarity; missing matter or data; adequate references. |
| Two ratings | Significance of the article and quality of the figures, from 0 to 10, set with the sliders. |
| Major contributions | What the manuscript adds to the field. Required. |
| Confidential report to the editor | Your frank view for the editors only; never shown to the authors. Required. |
| Comments for the author(s) | Numbered comments the authors will receive. Do not reveal your identity here. Required. |
| Attachments | Up to two files (.doc, .docx or .pdf), for example an annotated manuscript. Remove your name from the file properties. |
Click Save at any time, even with the report incomplete, and come back later.
Submit the report
- Submit Report works after you have saved. If a required part is missing, the form tells you.
- Once submitted, the report goes to the editor and you get a confirmation email. It can no longer be changed.
After you submit
- The manuscript moves to Assignment(s) Completed. You can view the manuscript and your submitted report at any time, and print the report.
- You see only your own report, never another reviewer’s.
- A revised manuscript may come back to you for a second look, as a new invitation.
- The editorial office sends reminders for open invitations and late reports. If the editor decides before your report is in, your assignment closes and you are told by email.
- Thank you: reviewers are acknowledged under “Credits to Reviewers” on the book page and get free access to the article they reviewed once it is published.
Confidentiality and AI
A manuscript under review is confidential, unpublished work. These rules come from our AI Use Policy, in line with COPE.
Never
- Share the manuscript, or discuss it with anyone, without the editor’s permission.
- Upload the manuscript, its figures, data or any excerpt to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI tool.
- Let AI write the substance of your review.
- Use the unpublished work or data for your own research.
- Try to find out who the authors are.
Allowed
- Grammar or language tools on your own review text, with no manuscript content pasted in — tell the handling editor if asked.
- The similarity report and Compare versions provided on the portal.
- Asking the editor if you are unsure about anything.
A reviewer who shares manuscript content with an AI tool is removed from that assignment; serious or repeated breaches mean removal from the reviewer pool.
Your profile
- In My Profile, keep your name, affiliation and email up to date, and choose your institute and department in the My Institute tab.
- Add links to your profiles (ORCID, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, LinkedIn) and your institution’s website, and upload a photograph.
